Frequently asked questions on traveling to Germany
What is the best time to visit Germany?
If you can, aim to visit during shoulder seasons (spring and fall). Ideal months are May and September, as they offer pleasantly warm weather and fewer crowds. While winter is an amazing time to visit Germany’s festive Christmas markets, it can be very cold and some attractions might have limited hours. On the other hand, summer can get quite hot.
Is Germany safe?
Germany is generally really safe, but I advise you to take precautions like anywhere else. Use common sense and avoid sketchy areas at night. Pickpocketing can be an issue in touristy and crowded areas, so be extra mindful of your belongings in those situations.
How much money do I need?
Depending on your travel style you can get by on minimal amounts of money if you hitchhike and couchsurf. For average backpackers, daily budgets can range from 25 € to 50 €. As always, there are many contributing factors such as transportation (which kind are you taking, how often are you moving inbetween places, etc.), accommodation (hostel dorms in big cities like Berlin can be expensive), food (most hostels have kitchens, so cook your own food to save on meals), and activities to consider.
How to get around Germany?
There are three main ways to get around Germany: by car, by train and by bus. All of them have their pros and cons but to keep it short: A car is perfect for roadtrips and getting to some off-the-beaten-track places. Both trains and busses run extensively through the country. Trains tend to be faster, but also more expensive. Flixbus is a great option to save some money if you are not in a rush.
Do I need a visa for visiting Germany?
Most nationalities don’t require a visa for short-term trips. However, you should always research visa requirements for your passport before your trip and contact the German Embassy in your country if you have any questions.
